Visudyne Therapy: A New Treatment of Macular Degeneration Receives FDA Approval.

Recently, the FDA granted approval for a new treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of severe vision loss for patients over age 50. Visudyne™ (verteporfin) photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves injecting the photoreactive drug into a patient’s bloodstream. A non-thermal laser then treats the affected retinal area of the eye, activating the drug as it accumulates in the area of damage. This causes the abnormal AMD vessels to close in an effort to stop the disease from progressing. Studies have shown a definite benefit in preserving vision from this serious eye disorder.
