Are You Eligible for LASIK?

January 03, 2022

LASIK surgery is a tried and true method of regaining clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts. It has helped many people see better, and this year, it could help you, too! Read on to find out if you could be eligible for this life-changing treatment.

For many, poor eyesight can be inconvenient. If you have to wear glasses or contacts on a regular basis, you know it can be a bit of a hassle to take care of your eyewear and possibly get a new prescription every couple of years.

However, LASIK can change all of that. We’ve treated people with all sorts of prescriptions, and it’s likely that we could treat you, too.

Risk Level

LASIK involves a slight amount of risk, just like any surgery. While 95 percent or more of patients experience nothing but positive results from this procedure, a tiny margin of people may experience complications. That being said, our expert LASIK provider, Dr. Bowers, discusses these potential complications during a consultation in which he performs an extensive test to determine eligibility, including if you have enhanced risk.

LASIK technology is also new enough that no studies of long-term effects have been done that can determine how your eyes will function many years after the procedure or as you age.

However, nearly 100 percent of LASIK patients express complete satisfaction with the procedure and leave glowing reviews, even several years after the fact. LASIK is designed to be a long-term solution, and from what we’ve seen so far, it serves its purpose with excellence. If you have any other questions about the level of risk involved, Dr. Bowers has answers for you!

Obstacles to Getting LASIK

Some people may not be eligible for LASIK based on multiple factors, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions like dry eye, eye disease, or chronic/autoimmune disease
  • Working in a field that prohibits refractive eye surgery or endangers eye health (e.g. military service or contact sports that involve direct blows to the face)
  • Being on certain kinds of medications
  • Frequent changes in prescription due to refractive instability (a condition in which certain hormones and bodily functions cause eyesight fluctuations)

Dr. Bowers does thorough studies of patients’ medical histories during the free LASIK consultations at Piedmont Eye Center. He can determine if a health condition or way of life will prevent you from being a candidate for LASIK. If none of these factors apply to you, you could be our next eligible LASIK patient!

While the LASIK surgery procedure itself is an outpatient procedure that only takes about 15 minutes, this time is bookended by several pre- and post-surgery appointments. These appointments may take place over the course of a few months. Also, full recovery from LASIK surgery requires at least a few days of rest afterward, along with post-surgery medication. If this isn’t an issue, now could be a great time for you to receive this treatment! If not, you may need to wait for a less busy season of life.

Can You Afford LASIK?

While LASIK is certainly cheaper in the long run than a lifetime of glasses and contact lenses, there is a decent level of expense involved—though our pricing is competitive. Current pricing for this surgery is about $4,200 ($2,100 per eye), and we offer several different payment plans to help make the cost manageable.
