When To See An Ophthalmologist For Your Eye Care?

September 25, 2022

Just the fact that you have started reading this blog, chances are you may need to see an ophthalmologist sooner than later.

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can ensure your eye health is in good hands by providing routine eye health care and diagnosis and treatment of eye disease.

Many eye diseases can be difficult to catch without routine exams with your ophthalmologist.  Even the simplest things like redness and dry eye, should they be persistent, could be signs of early stage eye disease and should be examined.

 So why see an Ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who are licensed to perform eye exams and prescribe lenses and medication, but ophthalmologists are also licensed to perform eye surgery and specialize in specific eye diseases and surgical techniques.  At Piedmont Eye Center, our doctors have been voted best in eye care* by the community and are committed to providing state-of-the-art treatment when you need us.

Here are some common signs it might be time to see one of our ophthalmologists:

 Do you have prolonged irritation:

Redness and dryness are common symptoms but can indicate uncommon eye disease.  If over-the-counter eye drops are not providing relief you should schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist.

 Pain or pressure?

Persistent eye pain is usually not a good sign when it comes to eye health.  If you have been experiencing pressure, lasting eye pain or even headaches, it’s time to schedule with an ophthalmologist.

Are you a Diabetic?

If you are a diabetic, you should be getting your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist to ensure that high blood sugars aren’t causing vision loss.

Have you had an Eye Injury or Infection?

Infections can have long term effects on your vision. Seeing an ophthalmologist can ensure that the infection does not result in long lasting complications or vision loss. If you have had an eye injury whether from getting a foreign object/chemical in the eye or trauma to the eye, an ophthalmologist can help treat the damage.

Do you have a cataract?

If your vision is cloudy or yellowing, you may have a cataract.  Cataracts require surgery for treatment and the removal of cataracts can greatly increase your quality of life and vision.  With advancements in technology and premium lens options, cataract surgery can now provide multi-focal vision correction. We are committed to offering the latest in cataract surgery for your safety and visual precision. If you think you have a cataract, schedule an appointment with one of our cataract specialists to find out all your options.
