Let’s be honest—most people don’t think about their eyes when they get ready to play sports. You grab your gear, maybe a helmet, maybe a mouthguard… but eye protection? It usually gets skipped.
Here’s the reality: eye injuries happen more often than you think, and a lot of them could be prevented.
All it takes is one moment. A ball moving too fast, an elbow in the wrong place, or even a finger to the eye during a game. Some injuries can cause permanent damage, which is scary—especially for kids who are just out there having fun.

The good news is that protecting your eyes is actually pretty simple.
Sports goggles have come a long way. They’re not big and bulky like they used to be. Now they’re lightweight, comfortable, and made to keep up with you while you play. If you wear glasses, you can even get sports goggles with your prescription so you can see clearly and stay safe at the same time.
One important thing to know: regular glasses or sunglasses are not the same as sports goggles. In fact, they can break and make an injury worse. Sports goggles are made with strong materials that are built to handle impact.
Kids don’t always think about safety, so it’s up to parents to help them build good habits. If your child plays sports like baseball, basketball, soccer, or anything with a ball or close contact, eye protection should be part of their gear—just like their shoes or uniform.
And adults—this applies to you too. Even if you’re just playing for fun, the risk is still there. It only takes one bad hit to cause a serious problem.
A lot of people think, “It won’t happen to me.” But many eye injuries happen to people who have never had a problem before. It’s not about how good you are—it’s just part of the game.
So this April, take a minute and think about your routine. Are you protecting your eyes?
You only get one set, and they’re worth protecting.
