An animating principle of Dr. Joshua Barbosa’s life has been, “Freely you have received, freely give.” After graduating from college, Dr. Barbosa spent two years working at the Hamilton Regional Eye Institute, where he cared for patients as an ophthalmic technician and served as a research coordinator. After witnessing firsthand the life-changing impact ophthalmic care can have on patients, he went on to pursue his medical degree at Wayne State University, followed by an ophthalmology residency and Anterior Segment Fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute.
During his Anterior Segment Fellowship, Dr. Barbosa received advanced clinical and surgical training in both glaucoma and corneal disease. Since completing his training, he has performed hundreds of glaucoma and cornea procedures, giving him extensive experience managing patients with these conditions in addition to providing cataract surgery and comprehensive ophthalmic care.
Following his training, Dr. Barbosa and his family spent several years at a mission hospital in Kenya, where he provided medical and surgical eye care to patients with a wide range of eye conditions. He also assisted with administrative oversight and helped equip and train the next generation of eye care practitioners.
Dr. Barbosa enjoys caring for the full spectrum of ophthalmology patients, with particular experience in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, corneal disease and comprehensive eye care. He considers it a blessing to be involved in protecting and restoring his patients’ sight.
In his spare time, Dr. Barbosa enjoys spending time with his wife and two young children, as well as running.
