Piedmont Eye Center is proud to be the first in the Lynchburg area to offer the latest iLASIK™ upgrade known as iDesign™ which replaces the Wavescan™ platform we have enjoyed for many years. Technology is always changing, especially in the field of refractive surgery, so it’s no surprise a more precise upgrade is here to replace it. This technology is a result of advancements in the NASA research program, specifically involved in the design of the James Webb Space Telescope which is used to transmit high resolution images of deep space back to earth. This level of high-definition resolution is now allowing us to map the human eye with even greater precision than we have ever been able to do.
Early trials showed that 99 percent of treated patients experienced little or no difficulty with the clarity of their vision and most saw a significant improvement in the quality of their vision with night driving and a reduction in glare. The iDesign™ testing takes about 3 seconds to perform and captures information 25 times more precise than conventional measurements used to measure for glasses. The 3-D mapping, which is unique to every patient, is transferred directly to the treating laser using all the data available to create a treatment plan as individualized as our own fingerprints.
Not every LASIK surgeon has access to iDesign™ for several reasons. First, surgeons must be a credentialed iLASIK™ provider. Second, the upgrade costs around $60,000 so surgeons have to be committed to staying current despite the cost. For Dr. Bowers, it was an easy choice. “Having this new technology to benefit our patients is worth the added cost. Patients expect the best and we are committed to providing it. It’s appropriate that we have this entering into the year 2020, representing our commitment in providing patients with the best vision possible without the dependence of glasses or contacts.”
